Abu Dhabi Declaration

DECLARATION ON AVIATION SECURITY FOR THE 37TH SESSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANIZATION (ICAO) ASSEMBLY

The Middle East States recognised the need to strengthen aviation security within the reign due mainly to the attempted sabotage of a Northwest Airlines flight on 25 December 2009. The values of the Abu Dhabi declarations emanating from the understanding to States enhance regional cooperation to counter threats to civil aviation. Accordingly regional states have consolidated a list of actions for members to implement to achieve the Abu Dhabi joint declaration objectives. Actions include, the strengthening of Annex 17 and screening procedures and technologies to detect prohibited materials; developing measures to protect and improve airports, in-flight and cargo security; promoting enhanced travel document security; targeting capacity building and technical assistance in response to USAP identified deficiencies; increasing the use of cooperative mechanisms to promote information exchange on security threats and advance passenger information; and sharing best practice and information in a range of key areas.
